Dance Mission Theater History & Mission

Dance Brigade's mission is to engage diverse Bay Area communities and artists in the exploration of contemporary social issues by creating, producing, presenting and teaching feminist and multicultural dance/theater. We envision communities and individuals connected and inspired by dance and engaged in collective action toward creating a more peaceful world.

Krissy Keefer co-founded Dance Brigade in 1984 as a feminist dance company. In 1998, Dance Brigade began to operate the 140-seat Dance Mission Theater at 24th and Mission Streets in San Francisco, and added significant producing and presenting, affordable theater and rehearsal space rental, artist development, and adult and youth dance instruction programs. Dance Mission Theater is an artist driven community facility dedicated to inclusiveness, fairness and justice. We serve a diverse group of Bay Area artists, audiences and students. Many female artists, artists of color and culturally specific ensembles consider Dance Mission Theater their artistic home. Master teachers of dance and music have created a thriving inter-generational community celebrating cultural traditions, welcoming students of all backgrounds. Our theater is a second home to local low-income children in our youth program and their families. This deep level of engagement is the source of our community and institutional strength.

Current Dance Brigade programs are: a 42-week producing/presenting season featuring multi-cultural dancers and choreographers, including Dance Brigade, our resident women's dance company; an extensive multi-cultural dance instruction program for 400 youth ages 2-18 and 2,000 adults with a focus on world dance forms; below market-rate rentals of our 140-seat black box theater and three dance studios; six or more Artists-in-Residence; and six-eight fiscally sponsored groups. Our artist-led professional theater employs more than 175 primarily female artists and technicians each year.

Dance Brigade's track record of presenting women's and other culturally specific ensembles, many with large followings, and our affordable prices, have resulted in diverse audiences at Dance Mission Theater averaging 15,000-18,000 people per year.
